Vampire Weekend covered a Rancid song? A RANCID song?! Do not be bewildered, yes they did. Download Vampire Weekend’s version of Rancid punk-ska classic Ruby Soho here.
It’s not really a surprise though. We have heard of A-Punk after all. I guess let’s just call it Ivy League punk rock. Ha!. Man, Vampire Weekend’s really being awesome right now. I even find myself increasingly blurt out the first few lines of Horchata out of the blue just about anywhere I am. They are infectious.
As far as the cover goes, I now have a new cool song added to my Summer playlist. Can’t wait to play it loud on a beach/surfing trip! “Destination unknown, ruby ruby ruby ruby soho!”
Dave Matthews Band didn’t win album of the year earlier today, but they did show what music is all about. Performing You and Me from their latest album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, DMB got help from an awesome crew of singers, percussionists, horn players and a string section to back Boyd Tinsley’s violin. AWESOME.
I was expecting to hear Why I Am, but they did crank ‘You and Me’ huge for the Grammys. The extra layer of symphony made it grandiose. And Dave doing his ‘dance’ made it the signature DMB jam. Something the band has been doing for almost 20 years, and something sadly not too many people know. Anyway, to us loyal fans it was an epic performance and that’s all that really matters. We have always heard and loved their great music, Grammy or no Grammy.
“Oasis finally split after a huge punch-up in Paris last night. It’s a sad, sad day for British rock history as the two brothers’ brawling marked the end of The Summer Of Bigness – and the end of an era. Noel and Liam Gallagher like so many times before in their lives, came to blows before a gig, this time at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris.
It all went wrong before their headline slot had even started with a furious backstage argument. A witness in the Oasis camp said: “It all kicked off after a few jibes were thrown back and forward between them. It got totally out of hand very quickly and all the pent-up anger just exploded.
“Noel has been so mild-mannered and above it all, but everyone has a breaking point. The fight was split up quickly but Liam smashed up one of Noel’s guitars to make his point.”….
Only the closest people to me knew how much a devoted fan I am for OASIS. Ugh, I am lost for words. Yes, things seemed weary for the Noel and Liam Gallagher but they have always carried on. It looks like this is final though. My favorite band, my personal heroes, the music that shaped who am I today has gone to split. If this is for real, then this is the day my music died.
On my way to the office I heard the single “It’s Alright” off 311’s newest album “Uplifter” this morning. And what better time to hear it. The heavy storm downpour left my jeans soaked, I was running late for office and the traffic never looked so damn awful. But anyway.
It’s Alright is the culmination of what 311 has been doing for the past 20 plus years. It opens with upbeat drum beats and then subtle reggae strokes fill in. The chorus then shifts to almost alt rock, after which funky bass lines plays. And the rest just kept my head bobbing. Like as if I’ve never heard of that familiar sound before. I missed it. Or maybe I’ve just been stuck to the Greatest Hits album. This is new and damn straight is it alright. It’s fucking 311!
So I immediately downloaded the new album. Usually I read reviews first, but no. Coz after listening to every track, no review will even matter. This album is for the fans, and it is fucking awesome. It’s for us who grew up to 311 playing all those songs on our cassettes, Cd players and in our Ipods. For us who threw up on countless house parties with loud 311 music blasting in the background. For us music fans who had overplayed From Chaos too long (Don’t Tread on Me was ugh, forgettable). We are in 2009. And what joy it is to have new songs from 311 that remind us how awesome their music is. I won’t be able to stress enough how cool this album is unless you get a listen. The whole album is great although there are a few that’s kinda lame. Here’s what I feel are the outstanding tracks.
i know what i have to do and do it.
i know what i have to do and do it.
but don’t know what it is until i’m done
i know it must be rough, you’re so much smarter than your friends
come clean in jokes, integrity in tennis shoes.
waiting thinking how’d i like to be kept waiting.
territory mutinies horizon. disease teaches immunity.
a promise implied can’t be broken
and even now in the sunlight with grapefruit juice and coffee bound and bountied to winter without end
would you two like each other or are you too alike?
i know what i have to do and do it
i know what i have to do and do it. but don’t know what it is until it’s done
i’ve been inventing you and continue inventing you
may we all make it home safely
i know it must be rough, you’re so much smarter than your friends
rehearsing disasters and forecasting all your needs
i dance early then got shy and had to go home early
the mirage will fade as it unfolded. the plot’s defamed it’s own voltage
a promise at the time can’t be beat
and even now as the snow is opening it’s whole in pieces and wets each grieving hold of last year’s trash
it’s not impossible to think of you thinking of me
way we all make it home safely
++++++++++
song meaning. doing what we can on what we have. mindful of the present and hopeful of the future. laughing with friends and living your life. befriending strangers and keeping in touch with the old. take time to know people, because not everyone is like you. and we learn from them. understand the one you love, they help us live. sometimes we get confused and unsure. but we know a lot about what we want. don’t stop. i won’t. listen to these songs. they help you remember that. everyone is my friend – owls.
